Donning his signature black parka with a tambourine (or a pair of maracas) and a full band rocking out him, Britpop-rock icon Liam Gallagher delivered an astounding performance last August 14 as he made his Manila debut at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay City.
The backdrop of the MOA Arena stage spelled out his name in huge, black letters, which seemed to scream an irrefutable British rock sound. It hinted at what was in store for the audience — a thunderous and satisfying evening of great rock and roll music.
And boy oh boy, did the 44-year old former Oasis frontman deliver.
Gallagher came to the Philippines to promote his upcoming solo album titled “As You Were,” which is due out October this year under Warner Bros.
Liam Gallagher is hailed as the greatest frontman of all time, according to a 2012 poll by Q Magazine.
Former Oasis and Beady Eye vocalist Liam makes his Manila debut last August 14 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. The event is presented by Ovation Productions.
His one-hour set featured his new singles including the recently released “Wall of Glass,” “Chinatown,” and “For What It’s Worth”. Other tracks from his forthcoming solo record were also played: “Greedy Soul,” “Bold,” “I Get By,” “You Better Run,” and “Universal Gleam”.
But Gallagher did not fail to meet the palpable anticipation of Filipino Oasis fans who had been waiting for the band since their cancelled concert back in 2002. Opening with “Rock ‘n Roll Star” and “Morning Glory,” he brought these fans into a familiar musical trance. In between singing his new material, he also performed other Oasis anthems such as “Slide Away,” “D’You Know What I Mean?” and “Be Here Now”.
For his encore, Liam rendered a stripped-down version of one of Oasis’s most popular songs, “Wonderwall,” to the delight of his Pinoy fans.
Gallagher, together with his touring bandmates, rocks the Manila stage with a delightful mix of Oasis anthems and cuts from his upcoming album.
Gallagher is currently on tour to promote his first-ever record as a solo artist, “As You Were,” which will be released in October.
Liam Gallagher’s Manila gig was utterly brilliant because it was successful in showcasing the complete genius of the British rock icon. Anyone who’s familiar with the rock scene of the ‘90s surely took comfort in Gallagher’s nostalgic rendition of Oasis anthems, while his new music proved just how imperative it is for this Gallagher to continue making prodigiously astounding music — for a very long time.
With beats and tunes reminiscent of his good old days, at the same time exhibiting modern, fist-pumping rock and roll vibes, his MOA Arena concert is inevitably one for the books.
Quite honestly, the only thing the Liam Gallagher concert needed was the inclusion of more songs in the setlist.
