Katrina Velarde, also known as “Suklay Diva,” has conquered social media once again!
With her powerful belting out of Michael Bolton’s “Go The Distance,” the 22-year-old Tondo native who performed on board the famed Wish 107.5 Bus last February 8 has been receiving raving reviews from netizens across the globe.
“One of my favorite songs ever written, and a very difficult song to sing. Katrina is awesome…So much control in her voice,” David DiMuzio, an online sensation and singer/songwriter, commented.
Mark Anthony Dedoyco, another YouTuber, shared: “I really don’t leave any comments in YouTube, but this [awakened] my intention to say she’s one of the best singers I’ve ever seen.”
Her WISHclusive performance has over one million YouTube hits as of writing.
Katrina was dubbed “Suklay Diva” after videos of her using a comb (“suklay” in Filipino) as a microphone while slaying high notes went viral online.
In 2013, many netizens were impressed with her effortless cover of Beyonce’s “Dangerously In Love.” Her performance was even shared by American R&B singer Chris Brown and Queen Bey’s lead guitarist Bibi McGill on their respective social media accounts.
Now signed under Viva Records, Katrina has also released her own single, “Lason Mong Halik,” which is a bittersweet ode to a former flame.
“Actually, maraming makakarelate ‘dun sa song. Wish ko talaga para sa single ko, mag-hit,” she shared with DJ Robin in a WISHclusive interview.
During her Roadshow stint, she also wowed Wishers with her impressions of Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Toni Gonzaga, Jessie J and Zsa Zsa Padilla.
With her on board the bus was fellow Viva Records artist, RJ Dela Fuente, who promoted his single, “Maybe It’s Time.” The pop balladeer broke into the music scene when he joined the first season of The Voice.
“Maybe It’s Time” is a track about learning to let go and finding the time to love oneself.
Both Velarde and Dela Fuente are co-managed by Manila Genesis and Viva Artist Agency.
