4 IV of Spades’ Wishclusive Hits That Induce That “Nostalgic” Feeling In You

Imagine that you’re watching a late-night gig and on stage stood funky lads donning retro-inspired outfits and tinted sunglasses, filling the air and blessing everyone’s evening with young-but-not-so-innocent music. Yes, it’s absolutely groovy.

We know them very well -- they are the IV of Spades, a fast-rising band that first assembled back in 2014 which up until recently, was a quartet composed of Unique Salonga (vocals/ guitars), Zild Benitez (backing vocals/ bass), Blaster Silonga (guitars), and Badjao de Castro (drums).

In an unexpected turn of events (which caused quite a stir in the Twitterverse), the quartet was recently transformed into a trio, as Unique left to pursue a solo career.

The ‘IV of Spades’ Mania

In a span of just a few years, the band took over playlists, topped charts, and captivated audiences both local and foreign.

On May 5, 2018, the band’s official Facebook page confirmed that Unique Salonga was on a hiatus to “continue with his personal endeavors”.

Despite the mixed sentiments online pertaining to Unique’s departure from the band, solid fans of the band continue to turn to their songs to find musical solace. Here are four IV of Spades’ Wishclusive hits that can induce that nostalgic feeling in you -- whether you’re already a supporter of the band or just about to be one:

I. Ilaw Sa Daan

“Ilaw sa Daan” is the band’s first carrier single. In 2017, it made their name resonate in the local music scene by giving listeners the perfect fusion of funk, soul, pop, and rock all rolled into one track.

In a Wishclusive interview, Unique explained that the track, which was co-written by Zild, narrates how an urban woman sees the dusk as the start of an adventure that will last until the clouds kiss the morning sun.

This Wishclusive video has now garnered over 7 million YouTube views.

“Hindi mo na mapipigilan ang saya
Damdamin mo ay umaapaw
Sulitin mo ang buong gabi
Bago pa sumapit ang araw”

II. Where Have You Been, My Disco?

Produced and arranged by all four original band members, the groovy song paints an imagery of a generation talking to another generation -- telling them how people in any generation will appreciate good music when they hear it.

“It’s about the time in the late 70s that there was a movement called “Disco Sucks”. In 1979, they gathered people who hated disco and they burned records. Basically, in this song, we want that era back because people were tired of it. The song is about the reverse idea of that movement because we believe that people won’t get tired of good music,” Blaster explained.

Their Wish Bus video performance has already earned 1 million views on YouTube.

“Children of the future, let me tell you something
Boogie is my life that I have never shown yet
Why have you forsaken all the things we know?
I wanna show it tonight”

III. Hey, Barbara

This refreshing track emphasizes the band’s ability to successfully showcase a lighter sound with a strong LSS factor. This Wishclusive has already gotten over 3 million views and features the young band’s feminist views.

“It’s about a certain patriarchal mindset. We grew in a community that we think men are superior. But we are actually not superior to women. We are all made equally. We can’t call women by our own preference,” said Zild.

“I don't care
What they say
I'm just trying to be one of the boys
So you can't
Change your mind
You can never stand alone in the dark”

IV. Mundo

This year, the group dropped their fourth fan favorite single, "Mundo.”

Digressing from their first three offerings, the mesmerizing track professes how it is like to fall in love with a girl and make her be your entire world.

This rock/alternative ballad became the group's most viewed Wishclusive on YouTube with over 60 million views and counting.

“Limutin na ang mundo
Nang magkasama tayo
Sunod sa bawa’t galaw
Hindi na maliligaw
Mundo'y magiging ikaw”

This blog post has completely changed my perspective on music. It's a must-read for any music lover.
