5 Ways to Keep Cool at Home During the PH’s Warm and Dry Season

If you’re feeling the scorching heat of the sun a bit more or daydreaming about going on a mountain hike or a beach trip even more than usual — it’s probably because the warm and dry season is here once again.

And because of the Covid-19 pandemic, most of us are experiencing the warm and dry days indoors instead of in cooler places.

In this special feature, we list down five things that you can do to keep yourself cool — and safe — at home during the pandemic.

1. Be a plant parent.

lants don’t just spruce up our spaces — they also keep our homes from overheating in the hottest of days. Plants help temper off the radiation emitted by the sun, absorb warm air, release oxygen, and provide cool moisture to the air  through the process of “transpiration.”  In fact, a study from the University of Vermont presented that “the moisture released by plants helps maintain indoor humidity in the human comfort zone of 30 to 60 percent.”

So, now may be the best time to unleash your green thumb and grow plants at home.

2. Stay hydrated — and refreshed.

On hot days, it’s but normal to sweat. Perspiration is the body’s natural mechanism to cool down. In turn, it can cause dehydration as we tend to lose a lot of water and electrolytes in our bodies when we perspire profusely.

This is why it’s important to drink a lot of water when it’s warm and dry out.

During warm days, you may also find yourself craving for refreshing fruit smoothies. Studies have shown that an appetite for fresh and hydrating fruits during the warm season is the body’s way of telling you that it needs to consume nutritious, watery foods. Watermelons, pineapples,  berries, and cucumbers are good examples of hydrating food options.

It’s also a good idea to cool down with frozen treats — just make sure that they’re not excessively sugary. Try going for healthier frozen options such as frozen yogurt, frozen fruit pops, and snow cones.

3. Wear breathable clothing.

When chugging plenty of water and taking shiver-worthy cold baths just won’t hit the spot, you might want to keep cool by wearing lightweight clothing with breathable fabrics.

Revisit your closet and take those light-colored pieces out to wear. Not only do these garments dry faster when we sweat, they also allow our bodies to breathe with ease and protect our skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, making us feel more comfortable amid the summer heat.

4. Chill with music.

Being a tropical country, the Philippines has had great experience with high temperatures. And Filipinos have come up with different ways to adapt to the sweltering weather, such as hanging out in air-conditioned malls and cafes or visiting Tagaytay or Baguio when temperatures rise. But since traveling isn’t recommended at this time, one invigorating way to beat the heat is to allow yourself to chill with good, soothing music.

Don Campbell, in his 1997 book “The Mozart Effect,” explained how music affects people’s body temperature “because of its influence on blood circulation, pulse rate, breathing, and sweating.”  Meanwhile, a different study states that music influences blood pressure, body temperature, and galvanic skin response.

A Harvard Medical School research also shows how the dopamine-inducing artform can “ease pain, stress, and anxiety” which is always good — because when temperatures rise, people tend to feel uncomfortable, cranky, and even hostile.

Bring out your speakers, crank up the volume, and get ready to cool down with songs that best soundtrack your summer.

5. Invest in a high-quality air-conditioning unit.

The warm and dry season can seem unbearable. There are times when wearing lightweight clothing and chugging down cold drinks just won’t do the trick. It’s best to invest in a long-term heat-busting solution.

Go for an affordable, high-quality air-conditioning unit that not only keeps the house cool 40% faster, but also has a 70% energy saving feature.

The #LGDualCool ThinQ Window Type and Split Type Air Conditioner has UVnano™, which removes 99.99% of bacteria thru a UV LED light to keep the wind-generating fan clean and fresh. It also has Plasmaster™Ionizer Plus which reduces harmful microscopic particles by infusing the air passing through the air conditioner with over 3 millions ions, and the Ultrafine Dust Remover which eliminates 99.9% of PM 0.1 size ultrafine dust up to a coverage area of 29sqm as verified by TÜV Rheinland.
