Alanis Morissette’s ‘Jagged Little Pill’ Manila Concert Set for August 1

Canadian-American music star Alanis Morissette is finally performing in Manila.

Presented by Ovation Productions, the concert will be held at the Mall of Asia Arena on August 1, 2023, Tuesday.

Her Manila comeback was originally set in April 2020 as part of a world tour commemorating the 25th anniversary of “Jagged Little Pill.” The album produced hits such as “Ironic,” “You Oughta Know, “Hand in My Pocket,” “Head Over Feet,” and “You Learn.”

The event was postponed two more times in December 2021 and November 2022, respectively, due to the pandemic.

Alanis made her Philippine debut in 1996, a year after her seminal record was released.

Tickets for her long-awaited concert will go on sale from March 29 via SM Tickets’ website and outlets nationwide. Prices will range from Php2,750 to Php14,750.

Per Ovation, those who bought tickets to the previous dates must request for a refund and purchase tickets anew (For inquiries, you may contact them here).

A generation-defining album

With “Jagged Little Pill,” Alanis successfully “captured the zeitgeist of the mid-’90s.” While it appealed to mainstream pop, it nonetheless evoked the angst-ridden glory of the decade’s grunge and alternative-rock scene.

In an Amazon Music mini-documentary, she described songwriting as something that permits her to feel things.

“When I write really angry songs about someone or a situation, I’m not writing to get back to that person. [It’s] because it’s the only environment where I can get angry and not have it be destructive. It’s just an expression — unjudged, uncensored,” the singer-songwriter remarked.

However, for her, the best part of songwriting is that after it’s done and the output is publicly shared, it becomes open for others’ interpretation. In the case of “Jagged Little Pill,” its raw and emotionally resonant songs garnered general acclaim from the public.

“I could see that they were crying when I was crying or they were wanting to move when I was moving or they were raging as much as I was raging — and I felt like I belonged in a way,” she enthused.

Selling over 33 million copies, “Jagged Little Pill” also earned the then 21-year-old Alanis four gramophone trophies during the 38th Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. At the time, she was the youngest act to win the said accolade.

Music magazine Rolling Stone ranked it 69th in its list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, while Pitchfork included it in their 150 best Albums of the 1990s.

Pill embodied a sharp, unashamed, sometimes hilarious range of emotions from rage to deep affection that listeners could relate to on a molecular level,” writer Evie Nagy said in her Pitchfork review.

The “Jagged Little Pill” world tour kicked off in August 2021 and became the top female-fronted tour of the year. Prior to the tour, the album was also made into a musical broadway.

The award-winning musician has since been occupied with various projects, including her 2022 meditation album, “The Storm Before the Calm,” and the string-heavy re-recording of “You Oughta Know” for Netflix. She also had a memorable concert stint at the tribute show for Taylor Hawkins. The late Foo Fighters drummer was also part of Alanis’ touring band for “Jagged Little Pill” in the ‘90s.
