Behind The Music: Josh Cullen

Wish Breakthrough Artist of the Year Josh Cullen on what it means to embrace his individuality

A stage lift rises. Eager fans, whose excitement is evident in screams, exude a contagiously wild energy. Then, Josh Cullen — donning a bright red jacket over a black sando-and-pants ensemble – appears on stage. And just like that, SB19’s eldest member delivers a medley of hits that make up the beginnings of his solo career.

As part of SB19, Josh has always been a promising figure. But with the desire to explore more of what he can do as an artist, he released solo tracks, following in the footsteps of PABLO and FELIP. Last year, he delighted A’TIN and BBQs (his fans) with a string of catchy tracks.

His debut, “WILD TONIGHT,” showcases his songwriting, producing, and choreography skills. “Pakiusap Lang” is a Pinoy rap song oozing a sensual vibe. “GET RIGHT” — another standout release made in the middle of a tour in Los Angeles, California — is a statement of someone fearlessly forging his way ahead.

These songs have proven a lot, allowing the P-Pop superstar to showcase his style. Collectively, Cullen’s solo efforts demonstrate his considerable artistic range and versatility. But more than that, his nascent discography already frames him as a creative deeply wanting to leave a mark on the scene.

There has been an undeniably palpable excitement surrounding him lately. And in this Behind the Music feature, we get answers to what drives him to create music the Josh Cullen way.

Josh Cullen Santos

During your Roadshow gig last year, you shared that you were going for an EDM vibe for your solo releases. Can you tell us more about your musical inspirations for your solo work?

This isn’t just about putting on a show or following a trend; it’s about authenticity. Every song I create is a reflection of my own experiences — the highs, the lows, the twists and turns. I’m on a journey of self-discovery as an artist, constantly pushing myself to evolve and grow. And you can bet that along the way, I’ll be bringing more good music to the table: Music that’s genuine, meaningful, and uniquely me.

Can you name five songs that heavily influenced your artistry?

Songs like “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen, “Cleaning Out My Closet” by Eminem, “Numb” by Linkin Park, “Cry Me a River” by Justin Timberlake, and “The Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance have definitely influenced me.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly how or in what way, but they’ve left a lasting impression on my artistry for sure.

What’s the biggest realization that hit you when you started making and releasing solos? What’s the most challenging part?

One of the biggest realizations for me when I started making and releasing solo music is just how enjoyable the process was. I mean, music is supposed to be fun, right? Hahahahahahaha! But don’t get me wrong, it’s also incredibly challenging, especially when juggling schedules with SB19. Balancing both worlds can be tough, but it’s all worth it in the end for the love of music.

At the 9th Wish Music Awards, you were hailed Breakthrough Artist of the Year, and you also won the special accolade Wisher’s Choice. How does it feel to gain recognition for your efforts? And what is your message to fans who keep supporting you?

It was truly surreal to receive such recognition, especially considering I only debuted as a solo artist last February 2023. Winning Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Wisher’s Choice in less than a year was beyond my expectations. I’m incredibly grateful for the support from A’TIN and BBQs. Mahal ko kayo!

2023 has been a ride for you and your group, SB19. What was the biggest lesson that 2023 taught you?

What a rollercoaster it has been for me and SB19! The biggest lesson? Well, it’s learning to keep our eyes wide open and our heads high in this crazy music game, you know? Hahahahaha.

Going forward, what’s your biggest drive in making music, both as a solo act and as part of SB19?

My main drive in making music, both as a solo artist and with SB19, is to leave a mark and make positive changes in the industry. I want to challenge the status quo, break boundaries, and inspire others with our music. Of course, our beloved A’TIN and BBQs are a huge part of this journey, motivating me to keep pushing forward and making meaningful music.

Black Star Entertainment and 1Z Entertainment have also recently announced a new date for the PAGTATAG! World Tour. Do you consider this tour (together with the album) a pivotal part of your career? In what ways have “PAGTATAG!” made you and the group stronger?

Although “PAGTATAG!” isn’t our first international tour, it has certainly opened doors for us. We were invited and featured to the likes of Good Morning America, Good Day LA, and more — things we never thought would happen.

This tour helped us connect to our international fans and reach a wider audience at the same time. Our goal is to bring Pinoy Pop music to the global scene, and we’re one step closer through this tour.

What’s next for Josh Cullen and SB19 this 2024?

More good music, that’s for sure. People who have followed me so far in my journey as an artist know that I don’t like to settle for something safe, so they can expect more of me exploring my craft in ways that are both expected and unexpected of me at the same time. But regardless of that, they can expect that all of this is for them, too.

If there’s any song you would like to dedicate to A’TIN and BBQs, what would it be and why?

“Liham,” kasi paano kaya kung hindi tayo nagkita?

What’s your biggest win as an artist so far?

I have only been a solo artist for less than a year, but despite the time, I would like to believe the 9th Wish Music Awards to be my biggest win. It was my first solo performance at a big awards show and actually winning two major awards was just a bonus. Wish has always been promoting our music with exceptional quality, and I’m very grateful.

If you weren’t a musician, what do you think you’d be doing?

If I weren’t a musician, I might have pursued a career as a professional e-sports gamer. However, upon reflection, I realize that my passion for music runs deep, and I would still be doing music whatever happens.

Looking ahead, what do you hope your legacy will be as a member of SB19 and as Josh?

I hope to leave a legacy as someone who worked tirelessly to bring about positive change for OPM and the Philippine economy, culture, and the arts — both as a member of SB19 and as Josh Cullen.
