Busking for a Cause: Climax Takes Music to Next Level

You have probably seen them busk or perform in metro’s busiest public areas. Having a vocalist as unique as their band’s name (he wears a mask), Climax is making their way into the local music scene not only with their impressive sound but, more importantly, with their advocacy — to play street music for a cause.

The band, signed under Viva Records, is composed of Max Guerrero (vocals), Gigi Arcay (guitar), Norman Perailla (bass) and Stanley Seludo (drums).

Last July 20, Climax had the chance to perform their originals, “Ako ang Pagbabago” and “Give Me The Chance,” along E. Rodriguez Avenue, Quezon City — but this time, they were boarding the Wish 107.5 Bus.

Get to know the band better.

How will you describe your music?

It’s mainly pop, but we always try our best to experiment and create our own distinctive sound.

Who are your band’s biggest musical influences?

Gary V., Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Eraserheads, Parokya ni Edgar, Maroon 5, The Script, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars

Why did you choose to wear a mask?

I’m a fan of superheroes, the mysterious ones. But this mask that I wear is a symbolic plea — our world needs real-life superheroes , superheroes that can save lives not by supernatural power but by love and compassion. That’s our advocacy.

Speaking of advocacy, tell us more about the busking that you do for a cause.

The advocacy that we have is called MusiKaramay, and our vision is sort of like [yours] — to have a bus roaming around the streets, and go busking for charities. We’ve been doing this for the past two years and it’s really great.

We started our first busking at the Boni MRT station. First it was just for fun, giving back all the blessings that we received…then we realized that it’s really good to help people.

(On their first busking, they donated their proceeds to two blind musicians performing at the station. So far, the group shared that they have already reached out to Bohol earthquake and Typhoon Yolanda victims, and to the Aeta community in Mayantoc, Tarlac.)

How do you feel now that it’s been two years since you started your campaign?

It feels good to sing for a cause, sing for a purpose — not just for popularity or to compete with other musicians, but to just enjoy music and make a difference in the world.

Climax’s Musikaramay has received a special citation during the 9th Epic Awards of the Philippine Academy of Medical Specialists.

This blog post has completely changed my perspective on music. It's a must-read for any music lover.
