FILSCAP Kicks Off OPM Week with Open Mic Event

The Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (FILSCAP) staged an open mic event Monday night at The Brewery at the Palace, Taguig City, to kick off this year’s celebration of Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino (OPM Week).

The gathering entitled “Songwriters’ Night: Open Mic” is aimed at intensifying the love for Original Pinoy Music (OPM) by showcasing the compositions of various artists across different genre.

“This event is FILSCAP’s contribution to Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino. It’s an open mic where anyone can play and perform their original compositions,” Rico Blanco, former Rivermaya frontman and FILSCAP President, shared.

“Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino is a proclamation we got from the previous administration to celebrate Filipino music…This is a very important or significant occasion wherein we create a tradition to celebrate Filipino music,” FILSCAP board member Noel Cabangon remarked.

In 2014, former President Benigno Aquino III signed Proclamation No. 933, proclaiming every last week of July as “Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino.”

The proclamation also acknowledges that the “the promotion and development of the local music industry not only advances Filipino art and culture, but also contributes to the development of the economy, providing employment and revenue stream, and supporting other local industries.”

Established in 1965,  FILSCAP is hailed as the sole and official music copyright society in the country.
