Gladys Barer: A Basket of Fruits for a Dear Friend
While the FM band 107.5 was in the process of transitioning into what was to become Wish, 49-year old counselling center worker Gladys Barer was already an avid listener. One day she chanced upon the plug: “Pwede ka nang mag-wish sa radio” (You can now make a wish on the radio).
Deciding to take the station up on its offer, Gladys made a wish. The request was not for herself but for her dear friend and colleague Baby Yap who was suffering from an illness.
Gladys recalled that Baby asked her for help with ordering fruits from Davao that might help boost her immune system.
Since Baby’s birthday was just around the corner, Gladys thought of wishing a basket of Davao fruits for her friend.
Not long after she sent her wish to the radio, Gladys received information that she was the week’s lucky listener.
“Thank you very much because you have [an advocacy] like this. It really gives delight,” Gladys expressed upon receiving a basketful of mangosteens and pomelo on August 17 – Baby’s birthday.
She hopes that the station will be able to help more people, “Hopefully more listeners can have their wishes granted.”
A grateful Gladys left the Wish 1075 headquarters with a happy smile, knowing that her simple act of love will create a beautiful memory for her friend of 14 years.
