Julie Anne San Jose Showcases New Sound in 'Breakthrough' Album

Departing from the sugary pop sound she is known for, Julie Anne San Jose explores a new musical territory in her newest album titled “Breakthrough.”

Launched on July 28 at the Eastwood Mall Open Park, the record sees the 24-year-old star showcase her intoxicating vocals through contemporary R&B tracks. The project also serves as her debut album under her new record label, Universal Records.

“It’s called ‘Breakthrough’ because it’s all about breaking through another world. [This] is actually different because the biggest album I’ve had so far is more of a ballad and pop. But now, it’s more of a contemporary R&B,” the Asia’s Pop Sweetheart shared in a Roadshow interview on July 26.

Julie Anne San Jose performs “Tayong Dalawa,” and covers Rihanna’s “Take A Bow” and Coldplay’s “The Scientist” live on the Wish 107.5 Bus during her recent Roadshow guesting.

Flair for Songwriting

Calling it “new” and “personal,” San Jose says she is delighted to have pursued this project because it is a platform where she can innovate herself more. Apart from dabbling into another genre, the songstress also lent her flair for songwriting in this album.

The seven-track effort contains two of her self-penned originals, including her current single, “Tayong Dalawa.”

During her sophomore Roadshow gig, San Jose performed the said track and gave a glimpse of how it came about: “When I wrote this song, it was pure ballad. I was playing the piano when I thought of writing a song. This just suddenly came [out]. I finished it in one day, because when I compose, I make sure that the song is finished in one go -- the melody and the lyrics are already there.”

“[Producer] Marcus Davis, who is also a good friend of mine, arranged the song. And I am just grateful because he added a new flavor to the song. It turned out really great,” she further revealed about the bittersweet single.

While she wishes to write more songs in the future, San Jose is also looking forward for her fans to “appreciate [her] new music.”
