Kakai Bautista: ‘My passion and my soul are in theater’

Singer-comedienne Kakai Bautista, known in the music scene as the “Dental Diva,” pumped up the Roadshow, Monday, February 6, with her WISHclusive performance of her debut single — a revival of Roselle Nava’s mega-hit, “Bakit Nga Ba Mahal Kita.”

She also showcased her musical chops with her covers of Donna Cruz’s “Isang Tanong, Isang Sagot” and Leann Rimes’ “I Need You.”

Though she is widely recognized as an actress gifted with a voice fit for a diva, she shared that she commenced and honed her passion for performing in the theater.

“I actually started in theater, I never tried the stand-up comedy bar…then on television, on movies. But, my passion and my soul are there [in the theater]. So I go back [whenever] I have time and the power to do a play or a musical, [because] that’s where I started,” she shared.

Bautista was launched in the mainstream entertainment industry when she was discovered in 2003 for her appearance in the play, “Alikabok.”

She revealed that she is currently finishing an indie film, and will be doing a soap opera and another movie afterwards. She also plays the role of Mercy in the award-winning musical comedy, “Rak of Aegis.”

Bautista, together with Jon Santos and Rex Navarrete, will be having an upcoming show entitled “Extra Judicial Kidding!” on February 15 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater.

“They will be entertained in three different ways. Basta magiging masaya po ito, ‘di po kayo mapipikon. I’m sure after this mapapaisip kayo na talaga ang mga Pilipino mahilig tumawa. Kahit problema ‘di natin pinapabayaan na hindi natin tawanan paminsan-minsan, because ‘yun ang nagpapalakas sa’tin,” she said.
