‘Morissette is Made’ Dubai Press Conference: 7 Memorable Quotes from the Asia’s Phoenix

For someone who has just turned 22 last month, embarking on a headlining concert series is no easy task. Handling the stress and exhaustion that come with staging a two-hour show in different places is not a walk in the park.

But with only half a decade into her career, Morissette is already at the top of her game. Unencumbered by the pressure of being hailed as the Asia’s Phoenix, she’s out to prove that passion, combined with hard work, can go a long way.

The journey of the Cebuana chanteuse encompasses years of joining local singing contests, and serving as front acts to artists like Yeng Constantino and to her future The Voice coach Sarah Geronimo. She also had her fair share of ups and downs as she tried her luck in showcasing her talent on a nationwide scale. Now that she’s finally living the dream -- with a sold-out debut major concert held at the Big Dome to boot -- there’s no more holding back.

On July 9, she returned aboard the Wish 107.5 Bus for the digital press conference of the upcoming Dubai leg of her “Morissette is Made” concert series. She also did an exclusive interview with the city’s leading English news outlet, Gulf News.

Here are seven memorable quotes from the high-spirited and inspiring diva.

On becoming a music star from starting out as a humble singer in Cebu

“I didn’t expect it but I worked hard for it. It has always been my dream ever since to be able to share my gift of music with so many people, and to be able to touch their lives as much as I can. To have all these doors opening, it came with a lot of risks and sacrifices. Not all my experiences and memories were all good, I’ve also had my share of bad experiences, but those are where I, together my family, learned a lot. All of it are worth it. I’m just grateful for all the blessings that keep on coming.”

On top-billing her own concert series

“It’s really a wish come true for [this] to have happened. A lot of doors have opened to me. I am really, really grateful and very excited for the next legs of ‘Made.’ I’m looking forward to see our kababayans and share all these celebrations of music with everybody.”

On what she is ‘made’ of

“Morissette is made of passion. That’s one thing that I’m proud of. I’m a very passionate person when it comes to my craft and just with everything that I do. I like to put my heart into what I do, even with my daily activities, like spending my time with my family. I want to make the most out of everything that I do.”

On being called the Asia’s Phoenix

“I think the ‘Asia’s Phoenix started when I performed at the Asia Song Festival last year in Busan, South Korea. I can associate myself with being a phoenix, a mythical creature that rises from the ashes. Like it, I choose to move forward and keep on going even though many doors have been closed to me.”

On staying relevant

“I am attentive with what my audience wants to hear from me. And I believe, I still have so much to give and share with everybody. So, I wish I could be given more chances to be able to share my talent.”

On the possibility of acting again

“Before The Voice, I’ve been acting in teleseryes on TV5… A lot of people have been asking me if I’ll act again, but for me I will always have that love for music. Of course, I’m open to doing stints whether for movies or soap operas. But I’m very, very different when I’m on stage and pouring my heart out through my music and my voice. I’ll always be singing. I think I wouldn’t ever trade that for anything.”

On her advice to the next ‘Morissette’

“Be your own artist. I admit that when I was joining The Voice, I had that struggle of trying to find my own sound and image. With what I’ve gone through in my career, I’ve finally found it. And I’m always flattered when people tell me that they recognize my sound and my style.

To other aspiring singers, stay true to who you are, and never forget the people who have been with you even before you reach success. Never forget your family, friends and mentors, and of course, God.”
