Powerhouse Diva Dessa: Determination and Passion are Key for a Successful Career

Before she earned the title Powerhouse Diva, Maria Desterza Alivio Salazar or simply known as Dessa reigned in the '90s as the country’s Front Act Queen. She was a fixture in the concert scene as she opened for several international artists who had shows in Manila like Bryan Adams, Patti Austin, David Benoit and Color Me Badd.

She also lent her voice to memorialize some of the most unforgettable OPM hits such as “Saan Ka Man Naroroon,” “Lipad ng Pangarap” and “Bring Back the Times.”

However, her brilliant vocals was not only confined in the local music horizon. Representing the country abroad, she bagged numerous accolades that further cemented her diva-status. These awards include 2nd prize in the 4th Asian Song Festival and Best Singer in Voice of Asia.

On February 24, she sat down with DJ Faye (who was pinch-hitting for DJ Robin for the Roadshow) to share good news with her fans.

After migrating to the U.S. in 2004, Dessa has recently returned to the country to do a project with Star Music.

“I’m happy to be back in the music scene kasi marami akong plano for this year. I will be recording a new song under Star Music and I’m very excited about this collaboration with them. I will be back in the studio soon, so make sure to watch out for that,” the 43-year-old belter beamed with enthusiasm.

After years of hiatus, the Powerhouse Diva also expressed her wish of having a warm welcome from her listeners.

Meanwhile, she also shared a piece of advice for upcoming artists. Asked about what are the keys for having a successful career, she said, “If you really love singing, samahan niyo yung passion niyo ng determinasyon at ng puso.”

Relating it to her own experience, she further remarked, “Ako kasi, first love ko talaga ang singing. I really love what I do, so even if I stop for a while, the flame still keeps on burning. And I feel blessed about it.”
For her Roadshow stint, Dessa performed “Better Days,” “All I Ask,” “I Will Survive” and “Greatest Love of All.”
Before leaving the Wish 107.5 Bus, she remarked how she enjoyed her WISHperience.

“Sobrang saya ‘to, kasi kakaiba — while kumakanta ka, nakikita ng tao yung ginagawa mo inside the bus.”

This blog post has completely changed my perspective on music. It's a must-read for any music lover.
