Roadshow Goes Classical with Asia’s Golden Girl Gerphil Flores

Wish 107.5 Roadshow took a break from pop music on June 9 to bask in operatic elegance, courtesy of classical-crossover singer Gerphil Flores.

Gerphil, a finalist on the first season of Asia’s Got Talent, surprised the listeners with her renditions of the Queen classic, “We are the Champions,” and Kansas’ “Dust in the Wind.”

During her stint at the popular competition back in 2015, the German-Filipina soprano captured hearts when she sang the Godfather track, “Speak Softy, Love.”

Apart from receiving a standing ovation, she particularly caught the attention of record producer David Foster who pressed the golden buzzer, sending her automatically to the show’s semifinals. The pivotal moment in her musical career earned her the title, “Asia’s Golden Girl.”

Gerphil considers her third-place finish in the contest one of the most memorable events in her life.  “It’s a humbling experience, because I never thought that [David] will give me the title Golden Girl for that golden buzzer.”

Winning the contest also helped her introduce her genre to the younger generation. The phenomenal performer described her music as a ‘crossover’ because “it’s crossing bridges from classical to pop.”

While enjoying her Wish Ride, the 25-year old singer also shared that her choice of music was mainly influenced by her mother.

“My mom usually brings me to different opera houses in Germany where I saw the stage sets and designs. I was also exposed to the works of Mozart and Beethoven at an early age, and liked it from then on. I think like I’m in another world whenever I listen to classical music,” she said.

Asked about her thoughts on classical singers that need to go abroad to pursue their dreams, she said, “I’d definitely encourage them to go abroad because the real challenge is there, and many classical singers are there too. Not to mention classical music started in Europe, Italy and in Germany, so I would say go for it.”

The UP College of Music voice major also shared her wish before leaving the Wish 107.5 Bus — to finish her studies this June.

This blog post has completely changed my perspective on music. It's a must-read for any music lover.
