Secondhand Serenade’s Upcoming Two-Night Show Proves Emo Isn’t Dead

American singer-songwriter John Vesely, popularly known as Secondhand Serenade, is coming to the Philippines for a two-night show on Thursday, August 29, and Friday, August 30, at the New Frontier Theater.

The concert, presented by PULP Live World and Skesh Entertainment, was originally scheduled only for Friday. However, proving that “emo is not dead,” the overwhelming response from local Filipino fans prompted the addition of a second show.

An early proof of how social media can serve as a launchpad for an artist’s career, Vesely released a demo via his MySpace page back in 2005. Armed with an acoustic guitar and a recording of multi-tracked vocals, he leveraged his strong online presence and deftly combined with a tight gigging ethic in San Francisco to promote his music.

At the time, he went on to become the number one independent artist for months on MySpace. He was also able to sell 15,000 copies of his album even without the backing of a label.

Vesely saw a global breakthrough in 2008 with his single “Fall For You” — taken from his second album “A Twist In My Story…” The song, a timeless anthem of unrequited love, was a standout among the slew of “emo” hits that took the world by storm in the mid- to late 2000s.

Earlier in February, the hitmaker piqued his fans’ curiosity after a throwback post featuring the music video of his other hit, “Your Call.” The speculations of a Manila comeback — over a decade since he did a full concert in 2012.
