Sponge Cola's 'Sinag + Tala' Brings New, Contrasting Music

As if one extended play (EP) is not enough, pop rock band Sponge Cola is offering new music with two EPs, featuring fresh tracks that bring contrasting emotions.

“Sinag + Tala,” which is scheduled for release on August 26 via a Teatrino, Greenhills concert, is under Universal Records.

“Instead of releasing one full album, we did a sort of two mini albums in ‘Sinag + Tala’. The Sinag songs are happy songs while the ones in Tala are generally sadder or darker,” Yael Yuzon, the band’s frontman, shared as they returned on The Roadshow on August 15.

“We couldn’t come up with one list when we were putting them all together — there are upbeat and somber songs; there’s just no way to combine them,” he recounted while telling why did they come up with such concept.

Whether people see it as a metaphoric representation of how Sponge Cola are doing these days or not, Yael lightly shared that “Sinag + Tala” was an easy way to introduce their diverging music in one go.

Yael further revealed one interesting thing about their latest project — the tracks that made it to the final cut were recorded “almost everywhere.”

“It was a different process; we recorded almost everywhere, for instance, in my parents’ house where we recorded parts of our debut album. We also revisited bunch of other studios where we previously recorded,” he told Wish.

“It was fun to do the album because we were not forced to finish everything inside the studio,” the frontman enthused in a statement.

But for a band who is now at their 15th year in the industry, “Sinag + Tala” marks only as the beginning of something bigger.

“We want to create something episodic — just like Star Wars! So “Sinag” and “Tala” could be part one and two of a series—and hopefully we could connect everything both visually and musically; from the album covers which you could connect into a bigger picture—who knows!” Yael eagerly hinted in a previous interview.

During their return to the Wish 107.5 Bus, their impromptu live mini concert featured WISHclusive renditions of their double EP’s lead singles: “Pag-ibig” from Sinag and “Coda” from Tala.

Two lucky Wishers, Erika Flores (15) and Ramil Rodriguez (29), also had the chance to jam and chat with the OPM act as part of the station’s Fan Ride promo for its month-long second anniversary celebration.

“It feels so good to meet the people who enjoy our music face-to-face, and have a conversation and jam with them. It feels really different. It’s awesome, thank you so much for this,” lead guitarist Erwin “Armo” Armovit, said.

Sponge Cola is composed of Yael (vocals), Armo (lead guitar), Gosh Dilay (bass) and Ted Mark Cruz (drums).
