The Script Returns to the PH Concert for “Freedom Child” World Tour

April 14, 2018 -- Irish band The Script held a concert at the SM Mall of Asia Arena as part of the band’s world tour promoting their fifth album titled “Freedom Child.”

The Irish Trio, composed of Danny O’Donoghue (lead vocalist), Mark Sheehan (guitarist), and Glen Power (drums), introduced their new songs, “Arms Open,” “No Man Is An Island,” and “Rain,” and also played their classic, well-loved singles such as “Breakeven,” “Man Who Can’t Be Moved,” and “Superheroes” during their Manila concert.

Rocking the MOA Arena

A little after 7 PM, the Script fans’ cheers echoed throughout the MOA Arena when the band went live. To kick off the music-filled evening, the band performed one of their classic hits first, “Superheroes,” and immediately followed it with “Rock the World.”

By their third song, “Paint the Town Green,” the audience was evidently hyped. And almost as if to check if everyone was having a good time,  Danny O’Donoghue asked the pumped up crowd in between lyrics: “I wanna know one thing, Manila – are we having fun tonight?” To which the crowd responded with wild, enthusiastic cheers.

At the end of their fourth song, “Man Who Can’t Be Moved,” Danny gave a wide-eyed smile and recognized the lively Manila crowd, saying, “That right there is the Manila I remember. Still there. Still right there,” Danny said.

To show their appreciation of their Filipino fans’ love, during the song “For the First Time,” the trio walked into the crowd and played there for the rest of the song as well as the next ones, “If You Ever Come Back” and “Never Seen Anything (Quite Like You).”

Even after the rest of the band returned onstage, Danny surprised fans at the Lower Box when he appeared amidst them during the song “The Energy Never Dies,” which seemed to be the general vibe of the crowd for the duration of the concert.

The Script also introduced “Crowd Surfing” which Danny explained was unique to their fifth album tour. The crowd energetically showed their appreciation of the band’s new song “No Man Is An Island” as they moved like orchestrated waves, hand-in-hand, taking a few steps to the right and then again to the left consecutively.

All in all, the Script performed 17 songs for their Manila concert:

  1. “Superheroes”
  2. “Rock the World”
  3. “Paint the Town Green”
  4. “Man Who Can’t Be Moved”
  5. “Wonders”
  6. “Arms Open”
  7. “Nothing”
  8. “No Man Is An Island”
  9. “If You Could See Me Now”
  10. “For the First Time”
  11. “If You Ever Come Back”
  12. “Never Seen Anything”
  13. “The Energy Never Dies”
  14. “Rain”
  15. “No Good In Goodbye”
  16. “Breakeven”
  17. “Hall of Fame”

At the start of the concert, The Script introduced the concept behind the “Freedom Child” album with videos from people of different races and culture, explaining what it means to be “free.” The group has been travelling across the world since September 2017 to promote their new album.

“You know what, Manila, it’s been too long since we’ve been to this beautiful city of yours,” said Danny right before reminiscing the last time they performed “Man Who Can’t Be Moved” for their Filipino fans. They last performed in the country in 2015.

“The only way that we could thank you guys for a night like tonight is to keep coming back again, and again, and again. We surely mean this -- we’re on our fifth album now,” said Danny as final words to their fans at the MOA Arena.

“You know we are in this for the right reasons: We [love] music. We are very passionate, very emotional. We love you guys! We’ll see you real soon. Manila, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. We’ll see you real soon,” Danny ended.

The band has held a total of four concerts in the Philippines including this one. “The Script “ was also a Twitter trending topic in the PH trends list for more than 8 hours on April 13 according to Trendinalia. Rising internet artist Andrea, a 16-year old Irish-Filipina singer and songwriter, opened their Manila concert.

The Script is an Irish pop-rock band formed in 2007, founded in Dublin, Ireland. Earlier that week, The Script thanked The Script Family in Asia for giving them the achievement of 168 Million Streams on Spotify Asia.
