‘Tides’ Brings Waves of Melodies: Performances from Joey Albert, Rhodessa, and More
In its 11th edition, the KDR Music House-produced Wish Date concert series provided us with another concert-slash-film-slash-theatrical treat at the Araneta Coliseum on Friday, February 16, 2024.
The first Wish Date concert of the year saw the on-stage return of esteemed OPM icon, Joey Albert. The event also spotlighted Wish award-winning artist Rhodessa, premier vocal group The CompanY, and KDR Music House’s very own Esay Belanio and Hakki Patricio.
An enduring love
The story, narrated by Dr. Clark (Kuya Daniel Razon), begins when Angeli (played by Mary Joy Apostol) first meets Kevin (JunJun Quintana) at an art museum and agrees to have a date. Later, they get married, and Angeli bears a child — Jas (Iyannah Sumalpong) who is later found not to be Kevin’s. He then leaves Angeli and her child and finds new love with Georgia (Leinel Natividad).
Years later, they all find themselves meeting at a country fair. Georgia, who never knew about the past affair between Angeli and Kevin, decides to leave Kevin to settle things with Angeli.
In the end, Kevin chooses to stay with Angeli and the child, proving that true love is like the ocean tides — it experiences ebbs and flows but remains enduring through time and change.
Music overflowing with emotion
Complementing the narrative is a series of performances from talented OPM acts. Rhodessa delivered an emotive set, commencing it with “Kisame,” which won Wish Ballad Song of the Year earlier in January. She also sang more memorable original tracks, “Ideya,” and “Isa, Dalawa, Tatlo.” Her rendition of Coldplay’s “Yellow” was another notable highlight.
Esay Belanio belted out her versions of The Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody,” ABBA’s “Mama Mia,” and Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers.”
After nearly three decades, Joey Albert made her on-stage comeback, singing the OPM hits, “Ikaw Lang Ang Mamahalin,” “Yakapin Mo Ako,” “It’s Over Now,” “I Remember The Boy,” and “Tell Me.”
“On behalf of KDR Music House, labis kaming nagpapasalamat sa inyong pagtanggap ng paanyaya at pag-celebrate ng Wish Date kasama namin sa gabing ito,” she endearingly told the crowd.
At one point in her set, Albert also related the lines of her signature hit to the story of the film.
“Isn’t it so amazing how the changing tides of life surprise us, minsan ‘I remember the boy,’ minsan ‘I don’t remember the feelings anymore’— katulad ng love story nila Kevin at Angeli,” she enthused.
Offering the audience another wave of nostalgia, The CompanY performed “Now That I Have You,” “Special Memory,” and “Muntik Na Kitang Minahal.”
Meanwhile, Hakki gave her own take on Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris,” Stephen Sanchez’ “Until I Found You,” and Lani Hall’s “I Don’t Want You to Go.”
Sharing the stage with her fellow KDR Music House artist, Hakki performed an emotionally charged rendition of The Weeknd’s “Save Your Tears” with Belanio.
