Voice of Hope: Zion Aquino’s Journey on His Way Back to Music

“I realized that music actually has purpose in my life.”

Almost turning his back to music, singer-songwriter Zion Aquino realized that surviving his fight against cancer has shaped him more as an artist.

Zion recently came back on the Roadshow to promote his upcoming album and share his inspiring story.

“Before cancer, I actually turned my back on music and said I just want to do advertising… I didn’t really find enough time for music and said it was time for me to really just put it on the shelf and focus on advertising. But after friends like Yeng Constantino, Julianne [Tarroja] and other colleagues in the music industry held a fundraising show for me, I realized that music actually has purpose in my life.”

Together with Yeng Constantino, he recorded “Liwanag,” one of the songs that introduced him to more audience, to reach out to the families of two young patients – one battling aplastic anaemia and the other, bone cancer.

Asked about his upcoming album, the singer was excited to share that it was filled with various genres, from love songs to millennial-hipster- kind-of- thing. Although entirely written by his manager, one thing that ties it is that, “there’s always a piece of [him] in every song.”

“My manager considered my style and she was writing all those songs to — it’s still me,” he added.

Teasing the listeners with a performance of “Give You My Heart and Soul,” the singer further shared about how he always thought that he could never sing a happy, feel-good song because of the natural doleful tone of his voice.

“Sounding happier was kind of a challenge for me…She [his manager] really pushed me beyond what I thought I could in this album including the single I’m currently promoting.”

Now back and all healed, Zion is ready to touch lives and be the voice of hope to everybody who is “struggling with anything.”

This blog post has completely changed my perspective on music. It's a must-read for any music lover.
