'What You Want': The Reinvention of Dance Floor Heartthrob Rayver Cruz

From slaying every role as a top-calibre actor to firing up the dance floor with his grooves, you can now add singing to Rayver Cruz’s showbiz profile.

With the launch of his debut album as a solo act, the dance floor royalty has reinvented himself to become a bona fide recording artist.

“What You Want,” which is under Cornerstone Music, features eight R&B-heavy tracks that blend the 27-year-old artist’s musical chops and signature “Rayver” moves.

According to Rayver, who comes from an entertainment Cruz clan which includes cousins Donna, Geneva, Sunshine and Sheryl, his passion for singing has been on the shelf for years now.

“My first love is dancing but deep inside, I know that I want to venture into singing. It’s like hearing an inner voice urging me, You need to sing,” he shared during his visit to the Wish 107.5 Bus last Augut 10.

The making of the album, which he said is a dream come true, began during laid-back jamming sessions and casual conversations with friends from the music scene.

“Actually, it all started over dinner with friends. Every time we go out and attend parties, Sam [Milby] always teases me to sing. Then I thought to myself, Why not?,” Rayver recounted in an interview with Philstar.

With his dabbling into the music scene, he wanted “to prove that [he] can be a versatile artist.”

“It’s about the right timing. Now I have an album and I hope to have some success with it,” he enthused during the launching of his album.
Some of the tracks included in his album are the lead single, “Bitaw,” the Marion Aunor-penned “Let it Loose,” and a cover of “Hataw Na,” popularized by one of his musical heroes, Gary Valenciano.

Prior to “What You Want,” Rayver took part in two dance albums released in 2007 and 2010, respectively.

Rayver co-produced the album with Sam Milby and Gerald Anderson.
