The global music scene has witnessed Asian pop’s rise to fame in recent years, with top-tier acts such as BTS, BLACKPINK, and One Ok Rock paving the way for musical acts from different Asian countries to gain international reach.

Recently, the Grammys published their “Many Sounds of Asian Pop” feature, where they handpicked 10 rising Asian acts who are breaking into the global pop music arena — and one of which is five-piece P-pop boy band BGYO

BGYO, which stands for “Becoming the change, Going further, You and I, Originally Filipino,” made their debut on Jan. 29, 2021. Their first single, “The Light,” which features electronic elements and a message that revolves around empowerment, hope, and self-love, has surpassed 100,000 Spotify streams in less than two weeks since its release. As of writing, the edgy pop track is sitting at over 2.4 million Spotify streams.

BGYO is composed of Gelo Rivera, Akira Morishita, JL Toreliza, Mikki Claver, and Nate Porcalla.

The band’s combined 22 million YouTube views and Spotify streams on their debut year alone propelled BGYO to land on the no. 2 spot of the Billboard’s “Next Big Sound” chart. They are the fifth Filipino act to ever appear on the chart, together with other Filipino acts and Wish Bus favorites SB19, Alamat, The Juans, and Morissette Amon

The P-pop group captivated audiences with their diverse sound and remarkable performances. While “The Light” introduced the world to their infectious energy and undeniable talent, BGYO showcased their versatility in their other tracks, such as “When I’m With You,” Tumitigil,” “Kundiman,” and “Magnet.”

Grammy’s recent “Sounds of Asian Pop” feature also shone a spotlight on other notable Asian artists who are making waves in the music scene, including Hong Kong’s Tyson Yosh, China’s Lexie Liu, and Thai singer Phum Viphurit.
