The Ransom Collective Ushers in New Sound in Latest Release, ‘I Don’t Care’

May 22, 2019

Since releasing their self-titled EP in 2014, The Ransom Collective has constantly charmed fans with tunes and live performances sealed with their distinctive musical whimsy and elegance.

But with the release of their new single titled “I Don’t Care,” the six-piece act is offering something different as they usher in a new sound that had them breaking limits and going beyond the traditions of folk-pop.

New Sound, New Home

“I Don’t Care” serves as TRC’s debut release under Mustard Music, a sub-label of Universal Records Philippines whom they have signed a recording deal with in February of this year.

Before its official launch on May 3, the teaser photos for the song — which are grainy images of the band members in bright-palette ensembles — have already signalled that their newest offering will be a deviation from their usual works.

This visual concept is also reflected in the song’s creatively-crafted music video.

According to vocalist Kian Ransom, the song sounds “a bit of a lot of things [that the band] has been listening to.” In a press release, they have mentioned the likes of Anderson Paak, Honne, Boy Pablo, and Chance The Rapper as the artists they have taken inspiration from.

Nonetheless, he clarified in a radio interview with Wish 107.5 that the piece is “not necessarily influenced by a particular style of music.”

The Ransom Collective vocalist Kian Ransom shares his thoughts about his band’s newest brand of music during their latest Wish 107.5 Bus gig.

“It’s more of we’re breaking down some limits we’ve had before when were exclusively trying to be acoustic. Now, we’re open to the idea of trying out synth sounds and electronic elements that before we’ve felt were out of place,” he remarked.

Bassist and vocalist Leah Halili seconded and said that the band invested in a sampler and in adding “more effects and textures” to come up with their least acoustic track to date.

Though TRC’s creative rebirth launched a new take on their sound, the band still presents messages of hope and enlightenment in their latest drop.

“I watched someone I love go through depression; this song is essentially about the journey they went through and the empathy that’s required to understand someone who’s going through something difficult,” Kian shared in a press release.

With its feel-good, groovy melody, the song makes for a great listen to anyone who is feeling down and is in need of motivation.

“I Don’t Care” is available for streaming on iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer, and Amazon Music.
